Gardening Trends for 2022

For Horticulture this month Linda Hooper shared with us the gardening trend that “bloomed” during the pandemic.

Everyone was planting a garden and retailers found themselves struggling to keep up with the demand for seeds.

Gardening became an activity for the entire family, working from home encouraged people to put more thought into gardening, landscaping and nature.  It helped relieve stress and boosted the connection with nature and outdoor physical activity.

Some of the benefits of gardening that people discovered:

  • Plants were included that transported you to the tropics
  • Blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors like using herb gardens and climbing vines
  • Garden rooms to extend living space
  • Gardening for wildlife by adding water features
  • Reducing lawns and using diverse plants
  • Maximizing balconies and porches
  • Creating gardens for peace of mind by adding water, grasses, and scented plants. Sensory gardens were created.
  • Getting the most out of each season. Journals were kept and pictures were taken.
  • Edible gardening saves money and is clean eating, involves the kids and reduces plastic usage

It was a trend that “bloomed” during the pandemic and is here to stay.

The Kentucky Derby is run in May and our Horticulture Table was a heads up to the flower of the month “the rose” and the color of the month “red.”
